It’s official: New York City will be a part of Amazon’s second headquarters, along with a Northern Virginia suburb of Washington, D.C.
The retail giant announced its decision Tuesday following much speculation it had gotten down to the final two areas to replicate a second base comparable in size and impact to its primary headquarters in Seattle.
“This is a giant step on our path to building an economy in New York City that leaves no one behind. We are thrilled that Amazon has selected New York City for its new headquarters,” NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio said as part of the announcement. “We’re going to use this opportunity to open up good careers in tech to thousands of people looking for their foothold in the new economy, including those in City colleges and public housing.”
Amazon already has thousands of workers at an existing New York office, mostly in marketing and publishing jobs. But the Long Island City location in Queens is expected to house around 25,000 employees. Some $5 billion will be invested between the new NYC office and the one in Northern Virginia.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the company announced that it would open another operations center in Nashville, Tennessee. Critics have derided Amazon for holding a months-long competition throughout the country, only to leverage tax benefits in certain cities, when it apparently had little intention of investing back in middle America.
New York will be giving $1.2 billion in tax benefits to Jeff Bezos’ company, per numbers from the WSJ, which is based on job creation. The Empire State Development will give Amazon an additional $325 million in tax credits if it takes up a certain amount of space over the next 10 years.
“We are excited to build new headquarters in New York City and Northern Virginia,” Bezos said in the official announcement. “These two locations will allow us to attract world-class talent that will help us to continue inventing for customers for years to come. The team did a great job selecting these sites, and we look forward to becoming an even bigger part of these communities.”
Amazon is expected to offer an average salary of $150,000 per year to workers in New York.
